2000-2015 R.I.P.

OUR RACE WILL NOT BE HELD IN 2016 The original Festival of Leaves 5K, held annually in Front Royal, Virginia each October since 2000, has been discontinued, and the 17th running of our race will not be held on Saturday 8 October 2016 as we had hoped. The organizers of this 5K sincerely thank everyone for their participation in the event over the years. Our goals were always to provide a low-cost, fun, friendly, quality racing event to the local running community, and to bring people to our small town to enjoy the festival. We are proud to have accomplished these goals through sixteen runnings of the event. We continue to feel that there is a place for these sorts of inexpensive, runner-oriented runs, and although we are unable to continue directing this particular race, we hope you will seek out and support other small, affordable races like ours that are focused less on making a profit and more on encouraging fitness and competition within the running community. (The Shenandoah Valley Runners, a 501(c)(3) non-profit & all-volunteer running club founded right here in Front Royal in 1977 and affiliated with the Road Runners Club of America, are involved with many such races, and we encourage you to get involved with them.) Unfortunately a new, completely different race, staged by a for-profit entity with the blessing of the historical society which our own race used to benefit, is being hosted this fall under our old race name "Festival of Leaves 5K", on the same weekend and at the same location. The new "Festival of Leaves 5K" race is not related to our old Festival of Leaves 5K in any way, shape, or form. It is not the same event and is being put on by different people. While we, the organizers of the old race, do not control the name "Festival of Leaves" and cannot do anything about this company's appropriation of it, we are disappointed with what has taken place and we want to be sure that there is no confusion in the local running community. It is a sad, unfortunate ending to a decade and a half of fun, low-key Festival of Leaves 5K races, started all those years ago on the steps of the old Warren County High School on Luray Avenue one crisp October morning. Again, we are proud of what we accomplished, and we hope everyone enjoyed our humble little race. It's been fun. Thank you!
